Review: Old 37 Starring Kane Hodder & Bill Moseley (Available on DVD Today)

OLD-37-Movie-Poster-Art

What is better than a film that stars Kane Hodder or Bill Moseley? A film that stars both of them! The duo of horror icons play Darryl (Moseley) and his little brother Jon Roy (Hodder). Old 37 is a twisted tale that is sure make you think twice about calling 911.

Samantha-Darryl-6

Old 37 was written by Paul Travers and Joe Landes, directed by Alan Smithee. Besides Hodder and Moseley, the film stars Jake Robinson, Sascha Knopf, Olivia Alexander, Brandi Cyrus and Kenneth Simmons.

There are not enough synonyms for “awesome” to use that would accurately convey how great this film is. It is original and chilling with a dash of comedy. For me, it brought back the Chop-Top Bill Moseley, many of the lines that he had reminded me of his lines from TCM 2 when they break into the radio station studio, I was waiting to hear “lick my plate you dog dick!“. Kane did what he does best, he destroyed people. It was a bit like watching him play a combination of Jason Voorhees and Victor Crowley, he was shy, silent and brutal. Combining Moseley’s humor with Hodder’s intensity make for the perfect storm.

OLD37FINALPOSTERFEAT

Old 37 is a bit like a drama meets horror, it’s almost like watching two different films in one. More times than not, those types of films tend to fall apart and only leave the audience scratching their heads, but the different stories within Old 37 are blended perfectly to make up one awesome movie. The conflict within this film are endless, there is domestic violence, insanity, murder, revenge, betrayal, standard bitchy teenage behavior and so much more. What’s not to love?

The plot twists are insane. I saw a couple of them coming, but it was entertaining nonetheless,I enjoyed it and I am not going to hold it against the film. There were a few that did catch me of guard. Long time horror fans may see what is around the corner, but if you are newer to the genre, you are in for one twisted roller coaster ride.

The cast as a whole was phenomenal. There were veterans and some newer to the game, but everyone was so professional that it was difficult to tell the difference between them.

Final Verdict

If you are into disturbing, revenge filled films, Old 37 is perfect. I loved the film and would love to see Travers write another film and include Moseley and Hodder, his writing combined with their talent and chemistry make for one hell of an awesome horror movie. I am going to have to recommend Old 37 to everyone that I know and you should probably tell a couple friends too.

Diary of a Horror Nerd: That Time I Met Victor Crowley

Fotor032280121

Conventions give horror fans like myself a chance to meet some of our horror idols. The worst thing that can happen to a fan is meeting their idols and finding out that they are a complete asshole, but Kane Hodder aka Victor Crowley is a 100% genuinely awesome person.

I met him at Scarefest 7 in Lexington Kentucky back in 2013, right after the release of Hatchet III. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of the Hatchet series, so I got the crossed hatchet symbol that commonly accompanies the Hatchet film titles a couple of months before Scarefest.

Anyone that has ever seen Kane in person knows he’s a really big guy, and myself only being 5’3, I looked like a child next to him. Despite his large appearance, he gives off such a friendly vibe. He is one of the easiest people to talk to.

Some “celebrities” pretend to be interested in what you have to say and the artwork you show them whether it be on paper or your skin, but when I told Kane about my tattoo, his eyes lit up. He came around the table and wanted to see it right away. When I showed him, he talked about how awesome it is and how much he loves to see pieces of his work immortalized. He asked ME for a picture with it, Kane fucking Hodder wanted a picture with me and my tattoo! I’m not a typical “fangirl”, but that moment was probably the highlight of my horror nerd experiences. I must insert a disclaimer here, Kane does choke, FOR REAL, male or female. He grabbed my hair (the tattoo is on the back of my neck) and yanked me around, but how can you be mad? I got tossed around by Victor Crowley!

1230067_10201282204210465_817331541_n
Kane with my Hatchet tattoo

After the picture, he spun me around and put me in a choke hold for another picture, again, he asked for another with ME. After the second picture, he put his arm around me and said thank you, he thanked me!?

My husband and I got married on Friday, June 13, 2008 (Jason Voorhees’ birthday is Friday, June 13). We told him about it and he thought it was awesome. He is so genuine and you can feel the passion he has for his work and the love he has for his fans when he speaks. He doesn’t try to rush you along, he gives his undivided attention to his fans and does not like to be interrupted. A wrestling announcer broke over the PA in quite a loud, obnoxious manner while Kane was talking to a fan. Needless to say, Kane was not very happy about that. He slammed his pen down, came out from behind the table with that “I’m going to rip your head off and shove it up your ass” look in his eyes and demanded to know who was doing it. Yeah, they stopped after that.

If you ever get the opportunity to meet Kane Hodder, seize that opportunity. He is such a great guy and would never stomp on your horror nerd dreams. For those curious, he is $30 for an autograph, but pictures and genuine awesomeness is FREE.

That was my experience meeting Victor Crowley, and I would not change a second of it for anything. Enough babbling and nerding out from me for now.

Until next time.

Convention Updates: HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati March 20-22nd (2 days away)

header

We are now only 2 days out from HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati, and there are even more updates pouring in. More additions, cancellations and Norman Reedus photo op questions answered.

As mentioned in yesterday’s HHW update post, megastar of The Walking Dead, Norman Reedus is now SATURDAY ONLY. This brought forth questions from fans about the photo ops they have purchased, well this was said in the HHW group on Facebook:

NORMAN REEDUS PHOTO OPS:

OK gang, here’s what’s going on for all Norman Reedus photo ops at HorrorHound this weekend. All tickets will be honored on Saturday, If you have a Friday ticket and can’t make it on Saturday email us immediately at info@celebphotoops.com about a refund. Time is of the essence.

We will still be selling all Saturday photo ops for Norman on site, on a cash only basis. We want everyone to get their photo. We’ll shoot as long as there are people there to shoot.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all again at the Sharonville Convention Center this weekend starting at 5pm.

The newest cancellation to note is Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead). He unfortunately had to cancel due to work on a Ben Affleck film. The amazing HorrorHound Crew did however make a new addition to the roster, Regan MacNeil herself, Linda Blair.

HHW315-LindaBlair

If you purchased a photo op with George Wendt (Cheers, House), you are in for a big treat. George will be dressing up as his beloved character Norm from Cheers for photo ops.

The Sharonville Convention Center is a large building, and when you’re swept up in the glow of the convention awesomeness, it can be a little difficult to make a game plan or find your way around. Maps of the convention layout along with a coded guide to which guests will be in which rooms has been released.

The final update is kind of an ironic one. Old Spice, yes the deodorant company, will be on hand giving out samples.

With so many last minute changes being made, Nathan and the rest of the HorrorHound Crew are being swamped with emails and questions in the Facebook group and Facebook like page. To ensure that everyone sees the important updates and everyone gets their questions answered, be sure to check out FAQ section of HorrorHoundWeekend.com, it has been updated and many of the most asked questions can be answered there.

I can personally only provide so many updates. To keep up to date on the minute to minute changes, be sure to join the HorrorHound Weekend Group and like the HorrorHound Weekend Facebook page. More updates have been added to HorrorHoundWeekend.com as well.

Here’s to hoping Norman Reedus does not cancel for all those that have purchased photo op and VIPs to meet him, and wishing him a world of luck for cramming 3 days into 1, he is one amazing individual.

Hope to see you all there!

Convention Update: HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati March 20-22nd 2015

header

HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati begins this Friday, March 20th, and updates continue to pour in. Guest additions, guest cancellations and more have been announced, and I am here to give you the most important changes.

Let’s start with guest changes. I’m sure most of you are aware that Norman Reedus will now be appearing SATURDAY ONLY. Below is a quote from Nathan Hanneman (the guy awesome enough to put the convention on) about why this is.

“Due to being booked for a talk show in LA later this week, we are put in the position to move Norman Reedus’ flights around to try and get him to HorrorHound Weekend – and it appears there will be no way for him to make it to Cincinnati in time to sign on Friday evening – meaning, Norman will now be a Saturday-only appearance. We were just informed of this change and are working out the details, but wanted to post this news ASAP. More information ill be posted as soon as we have it, including updates from his management direct.” – Nathan Hanneman

Another change has been made that will affect how long you may have to wait to meet The Walking Dead superstar. Reedus’ line will not really be a line per-say, when the doors open, a “ticket line queue” will begin. Basically, you go to Norman’s table and pick up a ticket, said ticket will have a number on it, a bit like taking a number at a deli, this will keep everyone from having to stand in a huge line for just one autograph. For more information on this ticket line queue, visit the FAQ section of HorrorHoundWeekend.com

Unfortunately, guest cancellations are common due to schedule conflicts. There have only been 4 cancellations this year. Those cancellations include Alex Winter (The Lost Boys), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog) and Mitch Pileggi (Shocker). Now that the bummer news of cancellations is out of the way, there have been some pretty awesome additions, C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Mark Boone Junior (Sons of Anarchy) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead).

No autograph price list has been released, the HorrorHound Weekend Crew is just as unaware of autograph prices prior to the show as we are. The only ones for certain are AJ Bowen (You’re Next) and Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills), who will be signing for FREE.

extramoneyAutographs are typically the most expensive part of conventions, so if you need a little bit of extra money for those names and have some collectibles laying around collecting dust, visit Wayne and Rob at the “The Print-Pixs Booth”.

The biggest change aside from the ticket line queues for high demand guests for this year is the Coco Key Water Park Party. This year, the party is pre-sale only, and the tickets have already sold out according to the ticket site.

There are a lot of exciting films being screened this year including the world premiere of Old 37 starring Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley. Not only will the film be screening, but Kane Hodder himself will be in attendance, pretty awesome bonus. The film that was dubbed the scariest film of the past decade will be screening as well, The Babadock. For full film festival schedule, visit HorrorHoundWeekend.com/events.

On top of all of the fantastic guests, don’t forget about the Re-Animator reunion which will include Jeffrey Combs, Stuart Gordon, Bruce Abbott, Barbara Crampton, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon and Dennis Paoli. For full guest list, be sure to check out HorrorHoundWeekend.com/guests

Review: Contamination- A Convention Story

424283_165263613592014_696506072_nConventions of all genres are filling our nation giving horror, sci-fi and pop culture fans alike a platform to mingle with one another and meet their favorite genre celebrities. Most of us only get to see what goes on in front of us, but thanks to State Of Mind Productions and the Contamination convention in St. Louis, fans now have the opportunity to see behind the scenes and fell the true essence of a convention.

I was recently granted the opportunity to watch and review Contamination- A Convention Story. What is Contamination? Contamination is a convention held in St. Louis that blends together horror, sci-fi, pop culture and stars from the adult entertainment world into one event. I am normally not a huge fan of documentaries, but this one is worth the watch.

I have personally been to a few conventions and have had the opportunity to meet some of my horror heroes, and they have been some of the best experiences of my adult life. The only problem with meeting some of these celebrity guests? You’re not really sure if they are really that into it, but Contamination- A Convention Story gives an in-depth look into not only the conventions, but the guests, and they are all genuinely fantastic human beings.

You get to hear from some of the biggest names on the convention circuit such as Kane Hodder (Hatchet), Tony Todd (Candyman), Bill Johnson (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) and many more. It is great to hear how they truly feel about conventions and the fans they encounter.

If you are looking for an informative, genuinely amazing documentary on a convention and the feel of what it is like to attend one, I would highly recommend picking up Contamination– A Convention Story. It is not ridiculously long like many other documentaries, but it is packed with interviews, fan insights and much more.

Convention Update: HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati 2015

header

Convention season is upon us, and one of the biggest horror cons is only a couple weeks away, HorrorHound Weekend Cincinnati has had some new guest announcements, schedules are being made, ticket prices are changing and so on and so forth. So, who will be joining the ranks along with the already announced Re-Animator reunion?

Some of the new names that have been announced include Jason Mewes (Mallrats), Norman Reedus (Friday and Saturday ONLY)(The Walking Dead), Kane Hodder (Hatchet), Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps), Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary), Tom Atkins (Night of the Creeps), Madison Lintz (The Walking Dead), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy), Alanna Masterson (The Walking Dead), Lawrence Gilliard (The Walking Dead), Terrance Zdunich (The Devil’s Carnival) and Jesse Hutch (Freddy vs. Jason). You can find the full guest list >>HERE<<.

Unfortunately, every convention is subject to having guests cancel due to work or scheduling conflicts. There have been only two cancellations as of now for this year’s Cincinnati show, Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog) and Alex Winter (The Lost Boys).

One of my personal favorite parts of conventions, especially HorrorHound, is the awesome list of films that will be screened. This years list includes some pretty promising looking films. I have only seen one of them, The Other Side, which I reviewed. You can read that review >>HERE<<. The one that I am most excited to see is Old 37 starring Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley. I’ve heard so many great things about the film, and it is finally getting a showing and will be released on DVD later in March. See the full list of films being screened along with a bit of information on them >>HERE<<.

Panels are another reason many go to conventions. HorrorHound has an impressive guest list, so of course the list of panels is going to be just as awesome. Some of them include an Old 37 panel, American Mary panel, Guardians of the Galaxy panel, Re-Animator panel and more to be scheduled. For the full list of panels and times, visit the events section.

What fun would a horror convention be without a great list of vendors to buy some cool sh!t from? HorrorHound always has one of the largest vendor lists around, and their vendor room is a horror nerd’s Wonderland. Some of the vendors on tap for this year include Dark Sky Films, Dead Ink, Living Dead Dolls, Samhain Horror, Scarebears, Super Pumpkins, Troma and so many more. For the full list, visit the vendor section of HorrorHoundWeekend.com.

As usual, the closer you wait to the date of the convention, the higher the ticket prices will be. There are still pre-sale tickets available. Single day passes are $20, Weekend passes are $40, VIP passes are $175 and weekend passes with early entry are SOLD OUT.  Pick up your tickets now at HorrorHoundWeekend.com to avoid higher prices, sell outs and longer lines at the door.

Planning on staying a couple of days of the entire weekend? Hotels near the Sharonville Convention Center are filling up fast. You may want to get your reservations made quickly to avoid longer travel times. Here is the full list of the closest hotels.

Be sure to join the HorrorHound Weekend group on Facebook for minute to minute updates.

Love in the Time of Monsters: A New Horror Comedy Starring Kane Hodder and Doug Jones

loveThe past couple of years have brought us zombie films and Bigfoot films, but what happens when they are combined? Love in the Time of Monsters, written by Mike Skvarla, directed by Matt Jackson and starring Kane Hodder (Hatchet), Doug Jones (Hellboy) and Michael McShane (Dr. Who).

What is Love in the Time of Monsters?

Two sisters lost their father in a horrific accident at a roadside attraction when they were children. Now, 15 years later, they venture to “Uncle Slavko’s All-American Family Lodge” to surprise their fiancée, who works as a costumed Sasquatch performer on the local “See the Bigfoot!” tour. Due to a freak accident, he and his coworkers fall victim to a super-cocktail of toxic waste that transforms them into primal, psychotic killers! Now, the sisters have to choose whether to kill him or help find a way to save his life. However, as the toxic ooze begins to build to critical mass in the swamp – and also contaminate the local forest wildlife – the only option left seems to be: kill or be killed! It’s a fight for survival for rednecks, bimbos, Latino lotharios and Croatian capitalists. Love in the Time of Monsters is a suspenseful, hilarious horror film that weaves its outrageous tale of love and zombie bigfeet through the dark woods of Northern California. While the film is violent and scary at times, its major themes are sacrifice, courage and forgiveness.

From what I have seen of the trailer, this is sure to be one of the best horror comedies to grace the screen since the original Scary Movie

Sometimes the best way to learn about a film is to hear what those involved with it have to say. Here are a few words from director Matt Jackson:

“I love movies. But as much as I love well-regarded, Oscar winning films, the ones I really love are those full-hearted, action-packed movies from my youth. With healthy doses of comedy mixed between heaps of horror and drama, Love In The Time Of Monsters is a love letter to those movies I grew up with. But it’s not just a nostalgia fest; although I took cues from the past, I wanted to show the audience something it’s never quite seen before, and something that will stand out on it’s own in the crowded cinema scene. It’s been a hell of a journey -one spanning half a decade (!)- and I very much hope you enjoy watching Love In The Time Of Monsters as much as I enjoyed making it.”
–Matt Jackson, Director

To keep up to date on Love in the Time of Monsters, be sure to like the Official Facebook Page, follow the film on twitter, @UncleSlavko and visit the official site, www.loveinthetimeofmonsters.com.
