We have said goodbye to the 2014 and the amazing films it brought us, but 2015 is looking just as promising for the horror genre. There are a lot of new faces and some sequels that guarantee to scare and scar you. Here are some of the upcoming horror films of 2015.
Written and directed by horror/thriller icon Guillermo del Toro, Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland), Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Jessica Chastain (Mama).
Set in Cumbria, in a crumbling mansion in a largely rural and mountainous region of northern England in the 19th century, young author Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) discovers that her charming new husband Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston) is not who he appears to be.
Crimson Peak is set for release on October 16, 2015.
Directed by Leigh Whannell, Insidious: Chapter 3 stars Dermot Mulroney (The Last Outlaw), Stephanie Scott (No Strings Attached), Lin Shaye and NASCAR driver Steve Coulter.
This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
Insidious: Chapter 3 is due out on June 5, 2015.
Kitchen Sink
Directed by Robbie Pickering, Kitchen Sink stars Ed Westwick (J. Edgar), Vanessa Hudgens (Machete Kills) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).
In the town of Dillford, it used to be that vampires, humans and zombies used to get along, but then something unexpected arrived and now it’s humans vs. vampires vs. zombies in all-out mortal combat. Now three teenagers must try to get things back to “normal.”
Kitchen Sink is set for release on September 4, 2015.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
Directed by Gregory Plotkin, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension stars Katie Featherston (Paranormal Activity).
The film will follow supernatural occurrences that take place in a newly moved family’s home. The family consists of four members including Ryan, a game developer, Ryan’s wife Emily, a housewife described as “more serious than her young husband—she’s constantly on the go, does yoga, and though loving, has an air of maturity about her”, their 6-year old daughter Leila, described as “a fearless, opinionated tomboy”, and Ryan’s younger brother described as a “less fitter, less funkier version of his brother”.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is set for release on March 13, 2015.
Poltergeist
Directed by Gil Kenan, Poltergeist is a remake of the original film that stars Sam Rockwell (The Way Way Back), Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married).
Angry spirits terrorize a suburban family.
Poltergeist is set for release on July 24, 2015.
Directed by Christopher B. Landon, Scouts vs. Zombies stars Tye Sheridan (Mud), Logan Miller (I’m in the Band) and Patrick Schwarzenegger (Grown Ups 2).
Three Scouts who, on the eve of their last camp out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak.
Scouts vs. Zombies is set for release on October 30, 2015.
Sinister 2
Directed by Ciaran Foy, Sinister 2 stars James Ransone (The Wire) and Shannyn Sossamon (Road to Nowhere).
A young mother and her twin sons move into a rural house that is marked for death.
Sinister 2 is set for release on August 21, 2015.
Directed by Paul McGuigan, Victor Frankenstein stars James McAvoy (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Daniel Radcliffe (The Woman In Black) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Winter’s Tale).
Told from Igor’s perspective, we see the troubled young assistant’s dark origins, his redemptive friendship with the young medical student Viktor Von Frankenstein, and become eyewitnesses to the emergence of how Frankenstein became the man who created the legend we know today.
Victor Frankenstein is set for release on October 2, 2015.
The Final Girls
Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, The Final Girls is a horror comedy that stars Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and Malin Akerman (Rock of Ages).
Max (Taissa Farmiga), a young woman grieving the loss of her mother (Malin Åkerman), a famous scream queen from the 1980s, finds herself transported back in time to 1988 and into the world of her mother’s most famous horror movie. Reunited, the ladies must fight off the film’s maniacal killer
There has yet to be an exact release date announced for The Final Girls.
Formally known as Amityville: The Lost Tapes, Amityville: The Awakening is directed by Franck Khalfoun. The film stars Bella Thorn (Blended), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fast Times At Ridgemont High) and Cameron Monaghan (The Giver).
Belle, her little sister, and her comatose twin brother move into a new house with their single mother Joan in order to save money to help pay for her brother’s expensive healthcare. But when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house including the miraculous recovery of her brother, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.
Amityville: The Awakening does not yet have an exact release date.
Directed by Mark Veveldine, The Vatican Tapes stars Michael Pena (American Hustle), Djimon Hounsou (The Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alexey Vorobyov (The Three Musketeers).
A videotape reveals an exorcism gone horribly wrong.
The Vatican Tapes is set for release on May 22, 2015.
Directed by the genius behind Hatchet, Adam Green, Digging Up the Marrow stars Ray Wise (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me), Kane Hodder (Hatchet), Adam Green (Holliston) and Oderus Urungus (GWAR).
A documentary exploring genre based monster art takes an odd turn when the filmmakers are contacted by a man who claims he can prove that monsters are indeed real.
Digging Up the Marrow has been released at several film festivals, but does not yet have a set release date.
I don’t know about you guys, but I think 2015 is looking to be a pretty promising year for us horror fans. The Poltergeist remake I’m not too sure about, but the rest sound pretty awesome.
