Guests

Now that the when and where are taken care of, it’s time to get to the who. Horror Realm and many other conventions usually have some kind of reunion going on, this year at the Spring Break Massacre, there will be two! You will be able to meet cast members from The Return of the Living Dead and the A Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Let’s start with The Return of the Living Dead guests. Representing this beloved cult classic are Clu Gulager, Beverly Randolph, Thom Mathews, Linnea Quigley, Jewel Shepard, Brian Peck and John Philbin. Allan Trautman (the tar man) was originally scheduled, but unfortunately had to cancel due to filming obligations.

The guests from the A Nightmare on Elm Street films include Brooke Bundy (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3&4), Beatrice Boepple (A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Erika Anderson (A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child) and Ken Sagoes (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors). Tuesday Knight of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 was originally scheduled to appear, but had to cancel. These guests may not be Robert Englund, but they are pretty awesome and names you don’t see often on a convention marquee making it more awesome to see them at Horror Realm.

Tickets

Now that you have seen the amazing guest list and started thinking about all the awesome horror goodies you could add to your collection, you’re probably wondering about tickets. Horror Realm is one of the best conventions we have visited in the past couple of years, and to make it even better, it is one of the more affordable cons to go to.

Whether you are planning to make this convention a weekend or a day trip, the ticket prices will not leave your wallet empty. VIP tickets (which includes a weekend pass, access to the VIP party with open bar, tote bag, t-shirt and more) are only $100 a ticket, compared to the $200 + you may see at other shows. Weekend passes are $40, Saturday passes are $20 and Sunday Passes are $10. Planning on bringing the family? No problem, children 12 and under are FREE with adult admission. Have you or are you currently serving your country? Horror Realm has your back with a FREE day pass with a valid ID.

The Horror Realm Experience

10479726_1202973596392769_1111870594712867126_nIt’s that time of year again, the smell of Sharpie, rare action figures and cosplay is in the air, that’s right, it’s convention season. Over this past weekend, I attended my first con of the season, Horror Realm Con in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Guests like Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, Predators), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp, Camp Dread), Sean Whalen (The People Under The Stairs, Laid To Rest) and Tony Todd (Candyman, Hatchet) were on hand to meet fans and swap stories. Below I will break down and rate my experience (out of 10) at Horror Realm.

Entrance: 10

Everyone’s least favorite part of any convention is the line they have to wait in to get in. I got there on Saturday around 12:30 pm and the line was not long at all. There may have been 3 people ahead of my husband and myself. There were no hiccups with getting in.

Admission Prices: 10

Single day passes were only $15. Compared to most other cons, this is by far one of the most inexpensive to go to.

Staff: 10

Every now and again, you will encounter one or more staff members that are rude and just act like they would rather be doing anything else other than helping you. The staff at Horror Realm was courteous and seemed like they genuinely wanted to be here.

Layout: 9

I don’t really like holding this against those that hold and organize the cons because you have to work with what you are given. I heard from other people that they had a hard time finding Felissa Rose and Sean Whalen. There were 2 different rooms with guests. I personally didn’t have a problem with they layout other than the fact that it was a bit cramped with everyone walking around, but what convention isn’t?

Guests: 10

The guest list is what draws people to the convention, and Horror Realm had a fantastic lineup. I cannot say enough good things about the guests at this con, Derek Mears, Felissa Rose and Sean Whalen in particular. They were fantastic, and were all excited to meet their fans. We met Sean first, he is so energetic and could not be any nicer. Next came Derek, he has got to be one of the sweetest, most genuine people you will ever meet. He really is a gentle giant, he listens when you talk and is genuinely invested in each and every conversation he has with his fans. Derek is probably one of if not the funniest person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Felissa was our last stop because she had a bit of a line. She is as sweet as she is beautiful. She was excited to meet every single person in her line, full of energy and one of the best huggers. Each one of them acts as though they’ve known you for years.

Lines: 10

The lines were not that bad inside. The longest we waited was for Felissa, but it was less than 5 minutes. Vendor lines were not bad at all.

Autograph Prices: 10

Autographs tend to be the priciest parts of conventions because guests aren’t paid an appearance fee, so they have to compensate somehow. The most expensive guests were the American Horror Story: Freakshow cast members. Derek was $20, Sean was $20, Tony Todd $20, Felissa $20 for a signed picture, $10 to sign something you brought and free hugs. None of them charged an extra fee for a picture with them at their tables which seems to be the new trend nowadays.

Vendors: 10

There were a lot of local Pittsburgh vendors. Most of the time, vendors sell just t-shirts and DVDs, but there were a lot of handmade goods available. Prices were pretty fair, none of them charged ridiculous prices.

Final Score: 79 out of 80

Our overall experience at Horror Realm was fantastic. If you have never been to a convention, this would be a great one to start out with. It is smaller and a lot less intimidating than other conventions and they always have a great guest list. We will definitely be attending Horror Realm again.

Horror Realm Releases Vendor List for their 2015 Spring Break Massacre

weblogo6

Other than a great guest list, what else brings your attention to a convention? That’s easy, the vendors and the unique goods you can procure there. Horror Realm has released the list of vendors that will be in attendance at their 2015 Spring Break Massacre via the event’s Facebook page, and I must say, the list is quite impressive. There is everything from photographers and artists to film, clothing and jewelry vendors. There are a few local artists and jewelry makers that are local to the Pittsburgh area, and I for one love the idea of supporting local, indie arts.

Some of the vendors include:

  • Cinema Wasteland- DVDs, posters, autographs and collectibles
  • Angela Rocco Photography- photography, jewelry and accessories
  • Brad Walkowiak- Independent and original films
  • Byron Winton- artist
  • Cheryl Holford- artist
  • Crystal Bawl- handmade jewelry and ceramics
  • Ken Rudisill- action figures, comics, magazines and posters
  • Dark Alley Bootique- jewelry, oddities and wedding bouquets
  • Lix- clothing, accessories, cookies and hula hoops

Not only will you be able to score some pretty unique items, but you can also support some pretty great charities. The Proper Pit Bull, a non-profit volunteer rescue and advocacy organization and Zombie Squad, a food drive and disaster preparedness organization will be on hand.

Full vendor list HERE.

Just a reminder, not only will there be fantastic vendors, but Candyman himself Tony Todd will be in attendance joined by Derek Mears (Friday the 13th 2009) and Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp). There will also be three of the lovely ladies from American Horror Story Freak Show in attendance, and they will be doing a Freak Show group photo op for only $60!

On the roster for this year’s show is talent such as Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Tony Todd (Candyman), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th 2009), Naomi Grossman (American Horror Story Freak Show), Erika Ervin (American Horror Story Freak Show), Tiffany Shepis (The Prometheus Project) and Sean Whalen (Laid To Rest).
